About the Border Collie
Developed along the border between England and Scotland for herding sheep, prized for an intense, work-oriented drive and remarkable trainability. Medium-sized and athletic, with a moderately long double coat (a smooth-coated variety also exists), most famously seen in black and white.
Temperament
Widely regarded as one of the most intelligent dog breeds, the Border Collie is intensely focused, energetic, and driven to work, often herding anything that moves if not given a job to do.
Common health issues
- Hip dysplasia
- Progressive retinal atrophy
- Epilepsy
- Degenerative myelopathy
Grooming needs
The double coat sheds moderately year-round with heavier seasonal shedding, and weekly brushing keeps it in good condition.
