At the geriatric stage, care for a Shiba Inu becomes largely comfort- and monitoring-focused: more frequent vet checkups (roughly every three to six months), a diet suited to aging joints and digestion, and continued gentle grooming assistance. Watch for any decline in mobility or appetite and adjust the home environment — ramps, raised food and water bowls, and orthopedic bedding — to help keep an aging Shiba Inu comfortable.

At the geriatric stage, Shiba Inus benefit from vigilant monitoring for an intermittent skipping gait or occasional hind-leg lameness, as well as a bunny-hop gait, reluctance to jump or climb stairs, or stiffness after resting, alongside the general signs of aging such as reduced mobility or appetite changes. Frequent veterinary check-ins make it easier to keep a geriatric dog comfortable while managing any of these long-standing breed tendencies.
